As the waves hit the jetty and the sands of the beach, two other mers layed among the rocks sunning themselves, their tail tips the only thing always touching the water. Splashes of water dropletts hit their bodies as the tide continued to come in, filling tidepools with luke warm water. Both mers were almost the same yellow ochre color but one was much smaller than the other. He was a young mer foal and he couldn't help but splash lazily at the waves as they broke and roled by. The little colt 's almost black eyes sparkled with the relflection of the seas. His shoulder length, burnt auburn, plum striped hair moved serenly with the winds with each breath of air. His name was Swampy and he was more than content on this fine day even after that strange sound had come over sea minutes before and suddenly stopped. It didn't seem to bother the youngster at all.
But did seem to bother the larger one, his sister, Sea Swept. She too was watching the tide and feeling the waters cool splashes on her hyde. Her long maroon, plum striped hair, blew with the gentle winds but she was not as serene as her little brother. She knew what kind of sound that was. And, she knew what happened when something like that took place. It was a distress call but also a summon to the dark mericorn herself. She had met this mer but she still had a healthy fear of what she could do.
She shook her head, remebering the mericorn and the things she'd seen. At least Deep Blue was better than her mother.... The thought saddened her and she looked at her little brother whom she had to raise on her own. He still didn't seem worried even when the call stopped. Sea Swept chuckled to herself. "He's too young to understand..." she thought. She turned her attention back in the direction the sound had come. "Still, I wonder what's going on?"
